Hip Mobility And Your Golf Swing

The economic swing – maximizing your investment

We cannot avoid the economic situation in our country. I do not need to tell you that everyone is re-evaluating the way they spend their money, yours truly included.  Over the years I have always stressed the importance of the using the best technology in clubs, balls and apparel as well as accessing the expertise of your PGA professional.
Many people feel helpless during this economic downturn and I feel just the opposite. This is the time for us to re-evaluate our intention and to make the most of our investments.

As it relates to golf we have the power to take control of our destiny. The only component of your game we have control over is our body. It is the most important club in our bag.

Swing flaws and your body
The next series of articles will focus on common swing flaws the physical relationships to those flaws. Over the years I have had the privilege of working with thousands of golfers, assisting them in the process of alleviated their swing flaws. In the past we did not have the benefits of technology to evaluate their issues. No I use 3D motion analysis as well as physical assessments to make the correlation between swing flaws and their physical mobility and stability restrictions.  There is NO doubt in my mind that the body is the main reason golfers experience swing flaws.  For example if you cannot get your torso to make a turn, cannot rotate your hips, or you are out of balance, swing flaws will occur.

A new concept for most golfers is that many upper body swing flaws such as coming over the top, casting and chicken winging are often a by-product of poor lower body mechanics.

In the kinematic sequence of the golf swing the downswing should begin with the lower body, not the upper body. To activate your lower body efficiently you will first need mobility or flexibility in the hips. This begins with the ability to internally and externally rotate the hips.

The following video provides you with a physical assessment and three exercises to increase the flexibility in your hips.

For the complete lower body workout check out my More Power and Distance DVD at the FlexFit Store When you purchase the DVD you also receive a FREE one year subscription to Golf Fitness Magazine and a golf fitness travel poster!
