What Is Your Bunker Handicap

Walter Hagen once said, “The bunker shot is the easiest shot in golf, you don’t even have to hit the ball.”  The fact is that most golfers struggle with the fear of hitting this shot.  How can you build confidence in your sand game?  First, you must figure out which type of bunker shot is best for you.  There are two techniques depending on the level of handicap you play to.

A. Bunkers for High Handicappers

Steps for Success
1. Square the club face
2. Set feet parallel to the target line, stand further away and widen your stance
3. Swing club along the target line
4. Accelerate through the shot while hitting sand before the ball
5. Follow through to finish while allowing the toe of the club to pass the heel the same as you would in a normal swing.

B. Bunkers for Low Handicappers

Steps for Success
1. Open the clubface and then place hands on the grip
2. Set feet left (open) to the target line
3. Swing club along the line of your feet creating and outside to inside path
4. Accelerate through the shot while hitting sand before the ball
5. Follow through to finish while maintaining an open face
